One of the newest items we have added are mezuzah cases. And just what is that, you may ask? And what
do you do with it? Well read on...
Deuteronomy 6:4-9 is a passage commonly known as the Shema, one of the basic Jewish prayers, which commands us to (vs.
9) “write them upon the doorposts of your home and gates”. Write what? Verse 4, which is “Hear
O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One”. And just how do I do that? You attach
what is known as a mezuzah case to your doorpost. A mezuzah is a piece of parchment that is contained in a small
4 - 6 inch decorative tube inscribed with the Shema, that declares the unity of the One God, Deut. 6:4-9 and Vehaya, which
expresses God’s assurance of blessing to those who will follow the commandments, Deut. 11:13-21. It is placed
on an angle leaning towards the inside of the door about shoulder high where you can touch it coming in and going out to remember
the law of God and its protection that surrounds you. The mezuzah is not a good-luck charm, nor does it have
any connection with the lamb’s blood placed on the doorposts in Egypt. It is a constant reminder of God’s
presence and God’s commandments. It is also a symbol of God’s watchful care over the home. The name
of God, Shaddai, which is on the reverse side of the parchment, is an acronym for the Hebrew words which mean “Guardian
of the doorways of Israel”. Placing a mezuzah on the doors of a home or office protects the inhabitants –
whether they are inside or outside.
Why Christianity has not continued the God-given command is a million dollar question, as is many other commands
that would enrich the lives of every believer, if they would be doers of the word and not just hearers.
